Visitor's Centre - so cool!
On 5th October, Lucy and I met a curator at George Washington's Mount Vernon because we wanted to receive information about their slavery history. We met with the curator, Jessie MacLeod who has been working there for over 10 years - she worked her way up from assistant curator to associate curator.
We got tons of information on their exhibition based on the slaves because that is our main topic for Mount Clare. We have got information on who the slaves were at Mount Clare but no records of where the cabins were on the land.
Lucy has been amazing on this trip because we both had a great time meeting with a curator then we took a tour of the mansion and surroundings. We were in groups getting information from different interpreters in each room, and then we took a self-guided tour outside to see the slave cabins.
This mansion was the most beautiful mansion I have ever seen! It has only been developed three times - https://www.mountvernon.org/the-estate-gardens/the-mansion/.
What I loved about this mansion is that three rooms specifically have multiple beautiful wallpapers!
Mansion's Exterior:
- This is the front (top of article) of George Washington's Mount Vernon Mansion - the back is in restoration mode. All the scaffolding was up because it was time to have the back restored to its former glory!
- The bottom right picture shows the back of the house with the scaffolding up, the photo was taken from the inside...
- I mean... this mansion has got an amazing view across the Potomac River - this estate/mansion is placed in the middle of nowhere and when we were there - it was so peaceful!
- We wandered around and looked at the slave's cabin and the outbuildings afterwards on the way back to the museum because we had to head back to Mount Clare's house for our next meeting with a couple of people who were going to help us with the open day.
